EU Noise Directive 2000/14/EC

Manufacturers of motorized equipment intended for use outdoors and destined for the European
market must comply with EC Noise Directive 2000/14/EC.
 The Noise Directive 2000/14/EC, which was adopted on 3 July 2000, covers a wide range of products, including but not limited to construction equipment, lift trucks, garden equipment, generators, and compressors.
The Directive applies to 57 types of equipment, each defined in Annex I and listed either in Article 12, or Article 13, of the Directive. Equipment listed in Article 12 is subject to noise limits and the involvement of a Notified Body, such as TÜV SÜD, is mandatory. Equipment listed in article 12 cannot be legally placed on the market without a Notified Body certification. Equipment not subject to sound power level limitation is listed in Article 13, where TÜV SÜD can act as a third party for measurement, or as a consultant – providing needed expertise.

The European Commission assigned a study to evaluate the implementation and administration of Directive 2000/14/EC. The main objective of the study was to review the available noise data, the stage I and stage II limits,
the feasibility to revise the noise limits and to review the equipment list in Article 12 and 13.
The study resulted in the following main recommendations:
- Add NEW equipment types to the Directive, e.g. snow mobiles, stone circular saws
- Move equipment types from Article 13 to Article 12, e.g. aerial access platform, chain saw, drill rig
- Remove equipment types from the Directive
- Stage II limits and reduced stage II limits are feasible for certain equipment types
It is anticipated that a revised version of Directive 2000/14/EC will be published in 2011. Please contact us for further details as this revision could significantly impact your product compliance.
 All equipment outlined in the Noise Directive must bear the CE Marking to demonstrate compliance to the Directive. European Union member states must allow equipment bearing the CE Marking to enter their markets, fulfilling the European Union's mandate of free movement of goods and services within its boundaries.
